Levelling up the regional economies has many labels: the Northern Powerhouse, the Midlands Engine, the Golden Triangle and the Ox-Cam Arc. But have they delivered improved economic growth? And will the chancellor’s new investment zones make the likes of Leeds a genuine regional competitor?
Since Channel 4 announced its move to the city, media companies have flocked to the area. The government has also promised to deliver high-speed rail to northern cities, which would position the region as a global leader in transport innovation.
Additionally, the government believes there is significant opportunity for Leeds and surrounding cities to become hotspots for the life sciences sector, which would bring new jobs and skills to the area. This presents its own challenges for developers and investors alike, and Leeds would need to keep up with the fast-moving nature of the life sciences sector in order to satisfy its occupiers.
So does Leeds have what it takes to becomes a powerhouse of activity and give the South East a run for its money? Join us for this EG Cities Live discussion on 29 November.
